Enjoy all the best flavors of Thanksgiving in this delicious holiday sandwich.
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday! The focus is on the food and I spend the day drinking beer with my family. As much fun as the holiday itself, I love the next morning. And not because it’s Black Friday – in fact I have inherited my mothers fear of shopping in general- but because of the leftover sandwich I get to eat.
My father always calls it a holiday sandwich, making sure that in addition to all the ingredients that go into Thanksgiving dinner, there’s a loaf of bread ready to go the next morning for this important Thanksgiving tradition.
What do you need to make a Holiday sandwich:
- Bread- You want a fresh loaf of soft bread. Some years I opt for a white bread, others a sourdough. They are also delicious on a brioche bun.
- Mayonnaise- I know some people prefer to put mustard on their holiday sandwich but I insist on having mayonnaise spread on both slices of bread and sprinkled with salt and fresh ground pepper.
- Leftover Turkey- Pick the cut of meat you like the most. I prefer a combination of both white meat and dark meat in my sandwich.
- Stuffing- Stuffing is my favorite Thanksgiving side and is an essential part of my holiday sandwich. Plus, it’s the perfect vehicle to soak up the gravy.
- Gravy- Drizzle gravy over the stuffing to make sure that your sandwich is moist and delicious.
- Cranberry sauce- The tartness of the cranberries is the perfect combination to serve with the turkey and serves the same role in this sandwich.
- Optional additions- I like to keep my holiday sandwich to the ingredients above but you could add mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, leftover salad or a slice of cheese. If you don’t want to go with a classic holiday sandwich, make a weird creation of your own.
How to make a Holiday sandwich:
Start by pulling out all the leftovers you intend to include in your sandwich.
Lightly toast your bread or bun. You don’t want your bread to be overly toasted because it will be difficult to keep the soft ingredients inside a firm piece of toast.
Apply a generous schmeer of mayonnaise on both pieces of toast and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
On the bottom slice of bread add an even layer of cranberry sauce.
Before assembling the rest of the sandwich, warm up the rest of the ingredients.
Place the stuffing on a plate and drizzle with some leftover gravy. Turkey gravy gets a little gelatinous when it’s been in the refrigerator, don’t worry about it, when you reheat the gravy it returns to its original texture and amazing taste. Microwave the stuffing and gravy 30-60 seconds.
Next, Add the turkey to the plate and zap for another 30 seconds. You do not want to overheat the turkey. It will be tough.
Place the turkey in an even layer over the cranberry sauce and then pile on the gravy soaked stuffing.
Add the final slice of bread and enjoy this amazing holiday tradition.
